On July 11, Electrosoft CEO Dr. Sarbari Gupta, joined other federal identity management experts for a one-hour ATARC educational webinar, “Beyond Traditional Boundaries: Modernizing PIV/CAC Authentication.”
Panelists talked through how federal agencies and defense organizations are managing identity, credential, and access management (ICAM) today – which is primarily through Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards and DoD’s Common Access Card (CAC).
Experts reflected on how much has changed in nearly 20 years since:
Technologies and best practices have evolved. So have the threats. And when, for example, a PIV or CAC card is lost or stolen, most agencies today issue temporary alternative authenticators that “don’t have the assurance of the PIV/CAC card credentials,” observed Dr. Gupta. “That’s why I’m personally very excited about FIDO2, because it’s an alternative type of authentication mechanism that doesn’t dilute the security, if done right.”
Kiersten Patton, ATARC consultant, moderated the discussion among these panelists:
Dr. Babur Kohy | Chief Cybersecurity Strategist, Identity Assurance and Trusted Access Division, Office of Government-Wide Policy, General Services Administration
Nalin De Silva | Cybersecurity Strategist, U.S. Department of Education
Tim Baldridge | IT Specialist, Identity Credential Management (ICM) Program, Defense Manpower Data Center, U.S. Department of Defense
Catherine Bergan | Security Project Manager, Application Development, Identity and Access Management (IAM), U.S. Federal Agency
