Implementing a PIV-Enabled Visitor Management System

CLIENT STORY

Electrosoft designed, configured and implemented an enterprise-level Visitor Management System (VMS) that interfaces with a variety of facility access control solutions installed within a Civilian Department.

PROBLEM

To align with the Federal mandates related to strong identity authentication and stricter access control to Federal facilities, a Civilian Department sought a fully automated turn-key VMS solution based on a commercial off-the-shelf system. The desired solution would identify, authenticate, provision and manage smartcard-based visitor access to the Civilian Department’s myriad facilities.

SOLUTION

Electrosoft designed, configured and implemented an enterprise-level VMS that interfaces with a variety of facility access control solutions. The VMS design, which fully meets the requirements of the FICAM Roadmap and Implementation Guidance, enables visitors with FIPS 201–compliant smartcard credentials to request approval through an online portal for upcoming visits to the Civilian Department’s facilities. If approved, the solution pre-provisions access in the local facility access control system. The solution uses standards-based protocols and interfaces to manage and report on building access requests and visits by federal personnel, contractors and visitors.

RESULTS/BENEFITS

The VMS solution dramatically streamlines visitor access to the Civilian Department’s facilities while improving security through stronger authentication and authorization of visitors. The solution has the potential to significantly lower costs for physical security management through improved automation. Notably, the Electrosoft-designed solution is serving as a pilot for this Civilian Department. It hopes to one day become a Government-wide shared service provider of VMS services.
